The festival kick starts with a large party on Walter Fletcher Beach. The main attraction however is the street party and parade held on Gloucester Avenue, which is Montego Bay's main thoroughfare.

Jamaica reggae music developed from the earlier musical styles of mento (similar to Trinidadian calypso), rock steady, and ska and reached its peak in the 1970s, with the works of Bob Marley and the Wailers. Marley was largely responsible for drawing the attention of the world to Jamaican reggae music.
