South Africa is a country of diversity offering holidaymakers a huge variety of experiences to choose from. This makes it one of the most popular holiday destinations in Africa. South Africa is without a doubt the continent's most developed country with good infrastructure, regular internal flights and excellent accommodation. Although it has the benefits of cosmopolitan city life you can still get off the beaten track if you want to, meaning a holiday to South Africa is ideal for any type of holidaymaker.

Many people who visit South Africa want to take in a safari and the country has of course become renowned as the 'home' of the iconic Big Five - lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo and elephant. South Africans are world leaders in wildlife conservation and the protection of endangered species and this ethos is carried into the attitudes and operation of the many parks and reserves that are dotted across the nation.

Thanks to the well developed and maintained road networks and supplemented by the fact that many of the country's residents speak English; South Africa is a great place to go for self-drive safaris, an exciting alternative to the more structured guided format. The national parks and reserves can be visited by anyone in their own vehicles, for a small fee and accommodation is often also available at the reasonably priced 'park's authority' lodges.

South Africa has some fantastic beaches so if you are looking for sun, sand and surf then it is the perfect location. The most popular beaches are Camps Bay and Clifton Beach near Cape Town; Plettenberg Bay on the Garden Route and Jeffrey's Bay in the Eastern Cape. These beaches are not resorts and so they do the landscape does feature hotels and nearby residential areas but are nonetheless wonderful areas to visit. Camps Bay in particular is very lively and known as a fashionable haunt for the rich and famous so who knows who you may bump into during a stroll along the picturesque shoreline. Another thing to bear in mind is that the waters on the Atlantic side of the country near Cape Town can be rather cool during the winter months in particular, whereas the waters of the Indian Ocean on the Durban and Kwa Zulu Natal coast offer perennial warmth and are arguably better for swimming.

If you're looking for a more cosmopolitan experience then why not head to one of South Africa's main cities. Cape Town has an assortment of cultural and historic activities such as Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was infamously imprisoned and the Cape Town Castle. The city has a vibrant nightlife with, fantastic cuisine and excellent wines. Alternatively ou can venture out and tour the nearby countryside and take I the spectacular views from walks up Table Mountain.

Johannesburg is very often referred to as the gateway to South Africa and many holidaymakers start their trips here. There are several great museums in the city and it is fantastic for shopping. The nearby township of Soweto is also a fascinating cultural insight.

Pretoria is the administrative capital of South Africa and famous for its Jaracanda trees, more than 100 parks, including bird sanctuaries and nature reserves. Home to the former seat of the apartheid government, the city is also renowned for its historical building, exquisite gardens and museums. In addition to its wealth of culture you can also use Pretoria as a base for day trips such as a balloon safari over the Magaliesburg, the Lesedi Cultural Village or the Nan Hua Buddhist temple in Bronkhorstspruit.
