If you are considering a ski vacation and are looking at ski resort choices, the following tips are points to keep in mind as you weigh your options.

? Type of resort/terrain: The first consideration involves your level of skill, and that of the members of your family or ski party. Do you need smaller, gentle hills, or mountains with helicopter access and nothing but powder? Will you need snowboarding slopes specifically for your teenager, or tubing hills for your whole family? How busy is it generally (think small children who need lots of space and no hotshots whizzing by), and is the snow manmade, natural, or a mix? Do they have cross-country skiing trails, if this is something you're looking for? Once you know what kind of terrain you are looking for, you can narrow down your options.

? Equipment: Depending on your needs and how far you will travel to your chosen ski resort, you may choose to bring your ski or snowboarding equipment with you. Alternatively, almost all resorts offer the option of renting equipment at fairly affordable rates, and this allows you to make the trip to and from without lugging heavy skis, boots and accessories. Look into this if desired, and include the price in your trip budget.

? Lessons: Even seasoned skiers can get rusty if they haven't been on the slopes for a year or two. You or others in your party may benefit from a lesson or two before hitting the slopes. Many resorts run ski schools, or at the very least have a ski instructor or two on staff for this reason. Don't be hesitant to take advantage of these professionals, especially if you are rusty or it is the first ski trip of the season. A little refresher could mean the difference between a great time hitting the slopes, and a trip home with an injury.

? Lodging: What kind of lodging options are available, and how close are they to the resort? Your options range from ultra-luxe five star hotel resorts with direct ski hill access, to cabins in the woods or hills, to small motels offering minimal service and no frills rooms. While you will spend much of your time skiing, if aprs-ski activities are important to you, be sure to do your homework so that your off-hours are spent in just the way you like them. You may wish to stay at a resort hotel that offers spa services, for example, so you can get a massage for your tired muscles; you may want a hotel located in close proximity to the local nightlife.

? Packages: Often you will find bargains by combining your lodging and your lift tickets, for example, or your plane and hotel reservations. Maybe you can get an all-inclusive deal and have the meals included in the price. Maybe you can get a better price by going slightly 'off-season'. Ask your travel agent or do a little research to finds the most value for your money. Many ski resorts have websites with detailed information; a bonus here is some will also post updated weather and slope conditions.

Happy skiing - have a great time!
